Welcome to Making A Home, a monthly collection of suggestions for home care.

February’s home is a sensual one. In this, the month focused on the heart and its assorted needs (we’ve got American Hearth Health Month, Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year, Ramadan, and Mardi Gras all happening in February!), our homes should provide us with all the comforts they can.

February is the last slow burn before the building momentum of spring fever becomes incendiary. It’s the final month to really lean into satisfying the gentler pleasures of our very corporeal needs.

We need warmth.

We need gentle textures.

We need invigorating scents.

We need complex yet comforting tastes.

We need laughter, and mental stimulation, and contemplative queries, and candid, deeply sincere, earnest conversations.

We need to fully know and embrace our convictions and be unwavering in them.

We need puzzles, and fondue, and stargazing.

We need meals cooked low and slow. Candlelight every time we gather at a table. Cut branches brought indoors for forcing.

February squares us firmly in our bodies, a foot in both winter’s uncompromising grip and spring’s gossamer embrace.

Let’s see what TLC our homes could benefit from this month!

Per usual, a disclaimer: Take these suggestions or leave them. Your house is YOUR house. Do in it whatever you will, in whatever manner suits you and yours best.
