Making a Home: December
A could-do monthly house care list
Welcome to Making A Home, a monthly collection of suggestions for home care. On the first Thursday of each month, I’ll post a list of tips for indoor and outdoor home maintenance.
Anyone who knows me personally knows that December is the month our home shines the brightest. From fairy lights on the mantle and strung up across areas of the dining room, to abundant candles on most surfaces, and from wooden snowflakes and trees hung up on doors and walls, to our Christmas tree itself, our home becomes a cozy den welcoming winter, and inviting it to stick around.
While many folks take down their holiday decor after Christmas, perhaps waiting until New Years or 12th Night, we tend to leave ours up until sometime in February. Winter lovers, the four of us, we are in no hurry to remove the merriment and gratitude this season affords and that we, in turn, honor.
December is also the month we host one of our two largest gatherings here in the Cove, my annual Ladies Cookie Exchange, with this year marking my 17th one (our other annual gathering is our Good Egg potluck party taking place over Easter weekend). My Englishmen head out for several hours so that I can focus on hosting, and I squeeze as many friends into our little bungalow as possible to swap cookies, nibble on snacks and sip drinks, and spill proverbial tea and wisdom. It’s the very, very best.
May this season bring coziness and comfort to you, whether that arrives courtesy of others, or you make your own bear den to hunker down and revel in. For those that find this time of the year challenging (as I do with summer), the only way out of it is through it (my summertime mantra!), so find ways to treat yourself and others with kindness, grace, and lil snacks.
Let’s see what TLC our homes could benefit from this month!
Per usual, a disclaimer: Take these suggestions or leave them. Your house is YOUR house. Do in it whatever you will, in whatever manner suits you and yours best.
